Swift
and Company Limited commenced business in 1897 when Mr. F. Glencross
Swift (pictured) formed a trading company. The business quickly
grew to become a major importer of consumer goods. Shortages
of these products during World War I encouraged local production
and Swift began supplying the new manufacturing plants with
chemical raw materials. Operations expanded and in 1925 business
also commenced in New Zealand.
Following
World War II, the role of the trading merchant changed. Major
international companies established themselves in Australia
and New Zealand in direct competition to the importers.
They became manufacturers of basic
chemicals and synthetic raw materials, while importers found
that technological developments provided them with a new range
of products to service a fast growing and specialised industry.
In 1996 Swift joined the Internatio Muller Australia / New Zealand
group of companies complimenting the existing Chemical Distribution
business of Robert Bryce and Company Limited.
Mr
Robert Bryce set up an importing business in 1902 with his partner.
The business flourished and they opened offices around the country.
In 1913 Robert Bryce and Company Limited were incorporated.
The chemical industry prior to World War II, still in its infancy,
manufactured only a few basic chemicals. So like Swift, Robert
Bryce & Co Ltd played an important role in meeting the nation's
need for imported chemicals.
In 1923 the company extended its activities to New Zealand.
Following many years of successful growth and to further strengthen
its financial base, the company went public in 1951 by trading
their shares on the stock exchange.
In
1969 world-wide links were established with Internatio Müller
N.V., a Dutch company who subsequently acquired 100% ownership
of Robert Bryce & Company Limited in 1986. Reflecting the
strength of operations, Internatio Muller expanded the product
and service range in 1998 with the purchase of the chemical
distribution business from BP Limited. In 2001, the companies
within the Chemical Division formed the global IMCD group.
To
further strengthen supplier relationships, realise synergies
and add more value to our customer's supply chain, the companies
Robert Bryce and Internatio Muller Chemicals combined forces
with Swift in 1999 to enter the new century as Australia's and
New Zealand's leading chemical distribution company. These companies
then traded as Swift and Company Limited.
In
2007 the IMCD Group has renamed all compies worldwide and we
now trade as IMCD Australia Limited.
